Read MoreLast summer I had the great fortune of spending a long weekend receiving one-on-one art instruction with Ken Elliott of Castle Rock CO. I'd been looking for an art workshop out west and found Ken. Then when I found out he had studied with Wolf Kahn, I knew I had to go. Wolf Kahn's work had intrigued me for for 15 years or more. I'd been into bold color in the past but in 2013 I was learning and working in a more traditional way along the lines of plein air. I learned a tremendous amount but was feeling a little [...]
Read MorePinto in the Sun was accepted into The Juried Art Show at Art at the Center in Overland Park. The gallery is located in the Tomahawk Ridge Community Center located at 11902 Lowell Ave. The show will run Friday April 4 through Sunday June 8, with the opening that Friday from 5:30pm to 7pm with awards at 6pm. This pinto was at a stable called The Paint Factory on the edge of town in Canon City CO. After driving by many times I finally called the owners who gave me permission to walk among the corrals and photograph the horses. It [...]
Read MoreThis is the final revision of Road to the Moon. I'd already signed and dated in November 2013, but realized I needed a couple more changes. This scene was in the Flint Hills of Kansas in May 2012. It was the year of a major drought and it was already in the 90s that afternoon. The evening cooled a bit and it was easier to catch some breeze on the top of a hill. [...]
Read MoreMy recently completed painting Last Light on the Arkansas (8"x10", oil) was juried into the American Vistas National Juried Exhibition, opening on Friday September 6th, 2013, 5-9 pm, at the Buttonwood Art Space at 3013 Main St., Kansas City MO. The gallery is a member of the Crossroads Art District. This is the scene I encountered as I was driving along the Arkansas River on my way to Salida CO in October 2012. The last clouds of the day over the Sangre de Christo mountains are the only surface getting the sun. It was a very tranquil place to stop. The [...]
Read MoreMy painting Early Morning in Canon City was juried into the Missouri Valley Impressionist Society Juried Exhibition. MVIS is a painting group that I joined late last year. The opening will be this Friday May 3 from 5:30 to 8:30 pm at Southwind Gallery in Topeka KS. I'll be traveling to the show and look forward to meeting other painters there...and collectors too! Southwind Gallery is located at 3074 SW29th St. in Topeka. The show will be up until June 25th. [...]
Read MoreI just finished this painting yesterday. It's the scene I used to see looking west from my front yard in Canon City CO. I've painted this scene numerous times--it just never gets old. For a while I had a job that required me to get to Pueblo by 8 in the morning on Saturdays, so I'd be running around with a camera before getting in the car. While I'm not an early morning person, I do appreciate the light that comes at that time of the day! At the time I wasn't painting much, but nonetheless the image and the light [...]
Read MoreThis evening was the opening for the Parkville in Art exhibit at the Cathy Kline Gallery in Parkville MO. I was very pleased to learn the juror awarded Skylight at Main St. and 6th First Place, and Where Main St. Meets 9 North received an Honorable Mention. Professor William Eickhorst explained what worked and what didn't with all the paintings that received awards, and was available to critique paintings by other artists there as well. It was great to meet other members of the Missouri Valley Impressionist Society. [...]
Read MoreIn mid October I went to Parkville MO for a paint out to support the growing art community in Parkville. It's north of Kansas City on the Missouri River. It was pouring that day, and since I still had about a three hour drive to get home and avoid high winds from another approaching storm, I decided to shoot a lot of images instead of waiting for a break in the weather. Yesterday I delivered these two paintings to Kline Art Gallery, where they will be juried. On Thursday November 15 from 7 to 9 pm, the awards will be announced [...]
Read MoreThis past September I began working with small (6x8 or 8x10) panels. It's been a great way to work up studies before starting a bigger painting. Problems were easy to address in another panel. Here are some paintings that I'll be working up in a larger format. This was from an photo I took at just the right moment in Butte MT, looking east from Uptown. This was the sky that I captured at sunset, looking south-southwest from Uptown Butte. [...]
